'Tis the season for telling government officials what to do. The Premier is distributing Mandate Letters to all departments. In that spirit, and so he doesn't feel left out, there are some chores for him too. There are seven of them, and I will take each in turn.
#7 End Nondisclosure agreements
In PEI, MLA Lynne Lund is introducing a new bill into the P.E.I. assembly later this month to end the misuse of non-disclosure agreements to “gag” people
This very good article by Dr. Julie Macfarlane, an emerita distinguished professor of law and a member of the Order of Canada is absolutely correct.
She is the co-founder, with Zelda Perkins, of Can’t Buy My Silence, a global campaign to stop the misuse of NDAs to gag victims..
She says "what is pernicious about an NDA is that your silence protects the person who victimized you from bad publicity or anything that would tarnish their image."
Nova Scotia's Human Rights Commission facilitates dozens (hundreds?) of the agreements, obscuring human rights, allowing serial offenders and altogether perverting the notion of Human Rights.
