Pedestrians get the Bird

Dear Mike and Waye,

Not having heard from you, I returned to the Mills site today. There seems to be ample space - 20 feet or more - along Spring Garden for a covered walkway. The sign simply says 'Sidewalk Closed' no 'Please Use Other Side' or 'Sorry for the Inconvenience'. I guess Bird is living up to its flipping name..........

More interestingly, the closed sidewalk on the east side of Birmingham just says 'Do Not Enter' on the south gate and nothing about the sidewalk. There are no safety measures for pedestrians.

At the north end, that strip along Birmingham says 'Construction Parking Only' and has a safety poster and a security sign.

Today being Saturday there was only a pickup and a sedan (a Mercedes I think) in the space - there is probably room for ten cars.

The sedan wasn't delivering toilet paper to the Porta Pottie

The obvious conclusion is that that stretch of Birmingham is, as it says, 'construction parking' and is provided free gratis by the people of Halifax. Parking up in Park Lane seems to be $1/hr, so our sidewalk has a market value of $240/day.

Now really, there is no Pedestrian Management Plan, is there? And no effort to recover the $240/day swiped from taxpayers. Over the life of the $26,866,800 project (2 years?) that would come to $170,000 or so.

Cordially,

Gus
